Why I Don’t Accept Insurance for Couples/Premarital Counseling

When a couple comes to see me, I can’t just treat the couple issue. To use insurance, counseling must be “medically necessary.” That means I am required to diagnose one of you with a mental illness. The problem is most of the time, neither partner is actually mentally ill.

I am not comfortable diagnosing someone with a mental illness who doesn’t have a mental illness. That stuff goes into your permanent health record. It can affect whether you get a certain job, a promotion, life insurance, and other important things. This really happens. I just found out today that someone in my own family was denied life insurance for exactly that reason.
